¿Cuáles fueron sus expectativas en el crucero? ¿Científicamente? ¿Colaborativamente?
Siempre esperé aprender mucho durante la estancia en el WeatherBird II. Ciertamente superó mis expectativas, conocer toda la mecánica de trabajo y colaborar de conjunto con científicos de alto rango a nivel internacional ha sido una de las mejores experiencias de mi vida.
What were your expectations leading into the cruise? Scientifically? Collaboratively?
I was hoping to learn a lot during my stay in the WeatherBird II and of course I did. Certainly it was beyond my expectations, to know all the work procedure and to collaborate with internationals high range scientists had been one of the greatest experiences in my life.
¿Qué era lo que más esperaba durante el crucero?
Sin dudas lo más esperado era experimentar la navegación en alta mar y el trabajo abordo.
What were you most looking forward to during the cruise?
Without any doubts the thing I was more excited about was to experiment the navigation and life at deep waters, and to work on board.
¿Qué más le sorprendió mientras trabajaba a bordo? ¿Con el trabajo? ¿Con la ciencia?
Lo más sorprendente de todo el viaje fue el trabajo en equipo, todos tuvimos arduas jornadas con poco descanso, creo que esa es la base para poder hacer ciencia de calidad, las relaciones humanas son un puntal en este sentido y todo el equipo demostró alto nivel de responsabilidad, profesionalidad y más que nada hermandad.
What surprised you most while working on board? With the work? With the science?
The most surprising thing was the team work; every one of us had long days and journeys of hard work with short time to rest, in my opinion that’s the main basis for to do high quality science. Humans relationship play a paramount role on this tasks and the whole team showed responsibility, professionalism and more than anything brotherhood.
¿Cómo fue el estar cerca de la tierra, pero en aguas profundas, cambiar su perspectiva del océano?
No cambió mi perspectiva del océano, solo corroboró la que siempre tuve, el vasto océano es el mayor tesoro de nuestro planeta y admirarlo uno de los más grandes placeres.
How did being close to land, but in deep water, change your perspective of the ocean?
It did not change my perspective of the ocean; in fact it confirmed what I always thought. The ocean is our biggest treasure and to admire it one of our biggest pleasures.
¿Cambió su visión del Golfo de México mientras trabajaba con científicos estadounidenses?
La visión cambió ciertamente, ahora aprecio más el valor natural de nuestro Golfo. El trabajo en conjunto con científicos estadounidenses me hizo percatarme de cuán importante es la colaboración entre países y científicos vecinos para lograr una mejor protección y comprensión de nuestros ecosistemas. Juntos estaremos siempre mejor preparados para lograr aprovechar al máximo y de manera sostenible nuestros recursos.
Did your view of the Gulf of Mexico change while working with American scientists?
It changed indeed. Now I appreciate much more the natural value of our Gulf. To work with American scientists made me to realize how important collaboration between neighbors countries and scientists is to protect and to understand better our ecosystems. Together we’ll be able and more prepare to use our natural resources in a sustainable way.
¿Cuál fue el momento más memorable?
El día de clases. Expresión de unidad en su máxima potencia.
What was your most memorable moment?
Class day. Union in a superlative expression.
¿Qué cosas nuevas aprendiste a bordo?
A utilizar el multicorer (y todo lo referente al procesamiento de las muestras de sedimento), a preparar anzuelos, a utilizar el CTD, a mejorar mi inglés, cuestiones de seguridad, a disfrutar de la comida foránea (gracias a Tracy), la vida en el mar, a marcar tiburones…… etc., etc., etc.
What new things did you learn while on board?
Almost everything. To use the multicore (including everything about the samples processing), to prepare hooks, to use the CTD, to improve my English, safety first, to enjoy foreign food (thank you Tracy!), life at the sea, to tag sharks….. etc. etc. etc.
¿Qué crees que significa esta colaboración para el futuro del Golfo?
Es invaluable, incalculable. El futuro del Golfo está en gran medida en nuestras manos, juntos somos más fuertes. Cuba + EEUU + México = 1.

What do you think this collaboration means for the future of the Gulf?
It is invaluable. The future of the Gulf is in our hands, together we are stronger. Cuba + EEUU + México = 1.
Hopefully, this was just the first one among many others! We are ready now!
