Senior Graphic Design Class Does Science!

USF Senior Graphic Design class students (read about our partnership here) had the opportunity to join the TBS crew in the lab and on the water to get a firsthand look at how some of our research is conducted. Students embraced the sights, sounds, and of course – the smells. One student even tried their hand at dissecting!

Students saw the many moving parts of the process. They observed lab set-up (pulling data sheets, labelling jars, preparing tools and supplies), sample prep (cleaning and measuring the fish), data and sample collection (weighing fish, dissection and removal of specified tissues), and got to know 3 of the 4 TBS target species: redfish, spotted sea trout, and snook.

From the dissection lab, students were also shown around the Marine Environmental Chemistry (MEC) Lab, where they learned about the instrumentation that will allow us to carry out analyses for pollutants (chemicals of known concern and chemicals of emerging concern) from our fish and water samples.

From graphic design to fish dissection, Gavin wears many hats.

Heidi is all smiles on a record-breaking catch day!

Heidi was able to join the team for fishing on a record-breaking catch day! Heidi, Alexandra, and Kylee caught 27 fish in the sampling sub-section of Middle Bay East. It was a perfect fall, Florida day, with light breezes, calm waters and temperatures in the low 70s. Fish were caught in the open bay and alongside the mangroves.

We selected Heidi’s branding system to represent the TBS project. Heidi and the rest of the class have been hard at work, using the branding system’s logo, colors, and typography styles to create some amazing web and print products that we will be using throughout the life of the project.

Tomorrow, the USF College of Marine Science is hosting Art & Science Night. Artists from the area have been invited to tour labs, attend talks, and participate in activities showcasing the different kinds of research that take place at the college. The idea is that these artists will create art inspired by scientific research! The Graphic Design class will be in attendance, sharing their final works from the semester and providing an artist-to-artist perspective for the first time in the three years that Art & Science Night has taken place. Works inspired by this event will be showcased in an exhibit early next year.
